The editor of Middle East Times and contributing editor of the United Press International, Claude Salhani shares his views regarding the US’ standing in the ongoing War in Afghanistan, as well as the crucial role of Central Asian politics in the outcome of the war.

A group of central Asian countries, including Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, have gathered together in a summit discussing plans regarding the amount, or rather, the kind of assistance they are going to give Afghanistan in support of the American war effort. According to Salhani, the support that Afghanistan is going to get from the Central Asian countries is more likely to affect the outcome of the war.

The US needs more than arms and ammunitions to win the war in Afghanistan. In addition to military force, the US needs the cooperation of the international community. This is where Central Asian Politics becomes an integral factor to determining the outcome of the war.

According to Zbigniew Brzezinski, the Kazakhstan OSCE chairmanship gives the country enough authority to influence the region’s politics. Having the large surface territory and the most stable economy, Kazakhstan plays a moderating role in the entire central Asian region. Uzbekistan on the other hand, plays a direct role in the Afghan front due to its location. According to a Kazakh foreign ministry official, the country bears a great tactical importance to the US.

The relevance of Kazakhstan to the central Asian region and Uzbekistan’s importance to the US war effort has made Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev’s visit to Uzbekistan an important international concern.

When asked about his hopes regarding the war in Afghanistan, the Kazakhstan president mentioned allocating a budget of $50 million in order to send 1,000 Afghan students to his country’s educational institutes from 2010 to 2018. In addition, Nursultan Nazarbayev also mentioned his plan to include Afghanistan in the OSCE summit this year.
